View Full Version : Wanting to Lift My Truck!

RAM AIR

JOE! I'm wanting to lift my truck. How do I go about that? Do you lift trucks? I'm also interested in traction bars. Do you do traction bars? I'd really like to have a set.
Thanks JOE!

Ram AIr, if you are looking for someone to do a lift install, just hollar. While I am not really close, it would be worth the drive. I have done quite a few lift installs and doing something on an F-150 would be a piece of cake. Wouldn't be the first truck I have lifted in my driveway. If you are interested, let me know. I can even get you hooked up with some traction bars too. I've got the welder and all to make the traction bars.

I mean heck I can prolly net the same amount of lift with a drop shackle kit and a large block in the rear, thats not what I did though, I had new springs installed

I dont know the in's and outs of too much of it to be honest.

nvycrmn, to have a shop do a SAS conversion on your truck (which would probably result in about a 6" lift happening is going to run you about $3000. There is a lot of time spent getting all the geometry right. The actual parts are probably about $1000 of that. It isn't really difficult, but for someone to do it as their first try without helping with some other SAS projects, probably over someone's head. I know I would think twice before doing it. If I did do it, then I would be doing a lot of measuring, double checking, tack welding, test fitting, etc. Take me a few days extra, but I would know it was 100% done right.

could you please tell me where to buy an axle, brake parts, springs, arms, brackets, misc.steel, and a custom drive shaft for $1,000.00

~$t3v3-o~
08-25-2008, 09:48 AM

maybe thats not enough.. we shall see tho :thumb:

Thermo
08-25-2008, 11:38 AM
Joe, if you go a local junk yard, they should have front axles laying around that you can pick up for about $500 which will have disk brakes on the front. The springs for the project are going to run you about another $300, the new driveshaft will run another $200 to have the stock one modified to work (lengthed). Sure, there will be a little bit more for the brackets, but those can normally be obtained with the axle off the donor truck as the sides of the frame are basically the same for many, many years. $1000 might have been a little bit on the low side, but all can be obtained for close to what I stated.

Sure, if you plan on having a completely new axle put under the truck, that alone will run a $1000 plus. A custom driveshaft built from all new components will run another $500 or so. So, sure, I can spend tons of money to do a SAS swap. But, not everyone has tons of money to blow on their projects.

JOE
08-25-2008, 01:07 PM
can you get me the number for the yards by you that have that axle with arms in driving shape for $500. it seems around me if you find one they are going for $500 striped or about $1500 for the running condition you are stating. now also how are you planning on hooking his abs system in on a 78-79 axle?

the older style axles are not meant to be awd so you will need to also change your transfer case. just another reason i said it is not going to happen for $3,000 unless thermo has a lead on that for $50.00 also?

I personally do not think regearing is a good move to save gas money unless you are way out of normal ratio....

for example, on long highway trips doing about 78 - 80 i did better with my 3.73's then i can ever dream with the 4.56's

how much gas to you need to buy to make up the difference... even if it is 3 mpg lets say...

so for every 3 miles you gain 1 gallon of gas, lets say gas is 3.50

1500 / 3.50 = it would take about 430 gallons of gas to gain that back - meaning break even

And chances are you will not gain 3mpg.

Now... with 37's or 38's i do definitely suggest re gearing... cause the truck is going to start to have a heck of a time handling it.

The above is strictly my opinion, that opinion may contain no factual evidence what so ever, the opinion above is not by a professional mechanic, just your backyard redneck

Question about the mpg .... are you using the right speed or what the speedometer thinks - there is a difference

well the speedometer is off a little, depends on who or what is clockin me. my trip tells me im gettin about 10.2 avg, but that might change when i get my speedometer calibrated, i hope. i do pretty good i suppose on gas. just want to make sure im not puttin too much strain on my truck with what im runnin. probably for my bday, i might do a 3in body and go with some 37's or 38's so i figured i needed new gears. should i go with 4.56 or 4.10? not really sure the difference.
